GamingCoding Class: Level 1 and Level 2 (1st-5th)
This is a club for newcomers and "old hats alike, to the world of coding and computer science. We will work on the FUNdamentals of coding, problem solving, and solving puzzles to level up. These foundations will lead us up to building their own apps, games, and widgets. Each child will gain a user name and password to build and experience outside of club, as well. The "Four C's" of Education are Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration, and Creativity. All of these skills are included in the fifth C, the ancient game of Chess! PALS Chess Academy makes The Royal Game more fun than ever. We use stories, humor and “chessercizes” (our own chess puzzles and compositions) to teach important strategies, tactics and valuable life lessons such as planning ahead, sportsmanship, taking responsibility for mistakes, memory retention techniques, and much more. Your child will love learning with PALS because we make chess FUN! National Master Lior Lapid, a four-time Colorado State Chess Champion, personally trains all PALS coaches and is the author of the PALS Chess curriculum. Our creative and kid-friendly lessons were used to coach the 2019 Colorado State Champions in the K-3 and K-6 Team Divisions (the Denver Language School Chess Club), as well as the first and second place individual winners in the K-8 division. This social based class will teach verbal communication, how and why to take turns, manners, sportsmanship, and will help build focus and stamina for other life tasks. We will make our own board game creations using the 3D printer for our game pieces. This is going to be a class filled with making fun art projects and crafts to allow students an outlet for expression, creativity and fun with friends. Students will get a say about what projects we will create and will have choice in what we create and projects we conqueror over the course of the semester. A healthy snack will be provided. Students can work with beads, feathers, yarn and fabric as they create all sorts of projects from hand sewing, crocheting, and beadwork to using the sewing machine. I will work with students as a group and individually as they move at their own pace. Students will have the opportunity to choose their own projects developing self-confidence as they go. Older/more advance students will challenge themselves learning how to use commercial patterns and are encouraged to "upcycle" clothes they bring from home. Lots of fun and creativity! Even in our world of advanced technology, people still need to know how to write legibly and have a unique signature. This class will help your student have neater handwriting skills, proper spacing, and we will even learn how to write in cursive! Your child will learn to use calligraphy pens and will experiment with artistic expression learning to sign their own signatures. We meet after school on Thursdays, in the auditorium, 3:30-5:00 p.m. We’ll be performing for Edison students in April, and will also go to the Shakespeare Festival at DCPA on Friday, April 24. Spend Friday afternoons discussing literature and art with other students and with Ms. Mathews. We will start each session with a short recess and a snack, then we will discuss a piece of art or a section of text. During this class, we will read the books When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead and Holes by Louis Sachar. We will also watch the film “Holes” and discuss it in comparison to the book. Students who will enjoy this class love to read and enjoy participating in discussions about their reading. Reading is required between sessions.
